Online Arguments
Online Arguments
1. Why did you choose this online argument for your assignment?
I chose this argument that I found on Reddit because I wanted to choose something that was (and still is) very relevant to our society and cultural dynamics. I was having a difficult time trying to to find an online argument so I tried to think of something that was a hot debate in our lives and then it hit me. Covid, and especially masks, were such a popular debate topic that it was pretty easy to find something where there were heated comments. This post was on the r/Walmart subreddit and stating that other stores, colleges and medical facilities are mandating a mask again. The post was asking if people wanted to start a petition to stop the mask mandate. So obviously there was some heated comments.
2. Provide three negative examples and concerns you have with this online argument.
The comments on the subreddit somewhat varied. Some were positive, some were definitely negative, and then some were also rude yet humorous. Here are some of the best negative comments, just to name a few!
"Let me guess, the evil democrats are flipping the covid switch back to high because an election is coming?"
"I didn't wear a mask before, I won't wear is the next time around either."
"I'll wear a mask when I can also open carry while working."
Sure, everyone is allowed their own opinion and whether people wear one in general is up to them. But if a store is mandating it, why is it such a big deal? My concerns with this argument are that it is a bunch of people having mini-arguments that aren't actually going anywhere. A lot of people didn't want to come to a conclusion but rather to just state their opinion or target someone just to hurt their feelings.
After reading almost the entirety of the subreddit (and taking into account every other argument online) here would be my 5 rules:
1) Think before you post!
2) Does my post, comment, serve the argument?
3) Does this argument need my energy?
4) Do your research before responding.
5) Come with an open mind!
Energy for online arguments can only go so far. It also depends on the topic and how far the argument goes. The language choice is also a key detail, as well as targeting someone personally especially when it doesn't add to the argument (which is never does). Having arguments online, especially on a place like Reddit usually will never get you anywhere. It just creates arguments that go around and around in a circle without having a genuine conversation and learning from each other.
Here's some steps that Walmart is taking to help against Covid!
