Oversharing Online

  • What factors might influence whether Facebook has negative influences, like links with depression, versus positive results, such as boosts in self-esteem?
    • There are many factors that influence the negative influences that Facebook can have. One big influence that I have experienced and heard other people experience is the lack of self-confidence and comparison between yourself and your online friends. Spending a substantial amount of time online can remove you from reality and make you think that you're missing out on certain experiences or aren't doing enough with your own life. However Facebook can have positive effects like connecting with family or friends you don't live closely to. You are also able to stay up to date on events in your neighborhood or cities. For example, you can be updated if police are in the neighborhood or even more trivial things like restaurant updates. There a lot more negative and positive effects of Facebook but it can be beneficial in moderation.
  • Is there an ideal number of “friends” or connections individuals have on Facebook that can improve their mental health?
    • This question could be subjective because the amount of friends you have or the time you spend on Facebook effects everyone differently. Some people may be more susceptive to the negative effects of Facebook based on their already pre-existing mental health problems. However, it does seem that the ideal number of "friends" or connections is keeping it to close friends and people that you know. This allows you to stay connected with the close people in your life but without the negative affects that Facebook can have. It has the possibility of improving mental health because your able to stay connected to people even if you're far away.
